At the first World Bowls in Sydney in 1966 the then Managing Director of a major sponsor Ampol Petroleum Ltd., Mr W.M. (later Sir William) Leonard donated a trophy for overall competition. To determine the winner of this keenly sought trophy the points scored by each country in the singles, pairs, triples and fours competitions are added together and the overall placings then decided. The winner of the World Championship in each competition receives a number of points equal to the number of countries taking part. The runner-up receives onepoint less than the maximum with each lesser placed country receiving one point less than its predecessor on the ranking-list. An additional three points is then awarded to the winner, two points to the runner-up and one point to the country in third place. For Leonard Trophy purposes the points scored by each country as above in all four competitions are added together and the placings then decided.
